▪Lead singer for Sonora Matancera during the 1950’s

▪Cruz left Cuba because of the Cuban revolution and never returned, she moved to New York and became a United States citizen

▪Cruz’s signature saying, “¡AZÚCAR!”, came about when Cruz was asked if she wanter sugar in her coffee at a restaurant in Miami, as a Cuban, Cruz wondered how he could even ask that question, Cruz would greet her fans with this saying which for her meant home, love, and kisses

▪Cruz and other musicians, such as Tito Puente, Johnny Pacheco, and Willie Colón created what is known today as Salsa music

▪Cruz is known as the, “Queen of Salsa”

▪Cruz won many Grammy’s, Gold records, and has a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame

▪July 22 is, “Celia Cruz Day”, in New York
