Black History Month Book & Craft: Step Right Up: How Doc and Jim Key Taught the World About Kindness

🐴How cute are these horses!🤗

We are so excited to team up with @raisingalegacy this week to bring you some awesome books and crafts for Black History Month!✊🏾
🐴
The first book we are sharing is, Step Right Up! This is the true story of, William “Doc” Key, an advocate for the kind and humane treatment of animals! This is such a fascinating story about the power of kindness and the amazing abilities of a horse named Jim Key!
🐴
In 1833 William Key was born enslaved in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Today Key would be considered a modern day animal whisperer as hhad a unique way of befriending and taming wild animals, especially horses!
When sent out for work on other farms Key witnessed animals being neglected, abused, and mistreated. (Note: Remember this is pre Civil War so one has to acknowledge the abuse and mistreatment of enslaved peoples as well.)
🐴
Key learned how to distill roots and herbs to make homemade remedies from his mother. He began treating injured animals across Tennessee, earning the name, “Doc Key.”
🐴
After the Civil War Key bought his first patch of land in Shelbyville to build his horse hospital. Key also launched his own line of medicine. Keystone Liniment could be used for treating people and animals!
🐴
While in Tupelo, Mississippi Key visited a rundown circus where he found a purebred Arabian horse in extreme need of treatment. He bought her naming her, Lauretta. Key nursed her back to health and she gave birth to a colt whom Key named, Jim Key. Jim was born sickly, but Key used his magic touch and soon he was healthy and strong!🐎
🐴
Jim would help Key sell his medicine by pretending to be sick before a crowd, and then immediately prancing around after being given a spoonful of medicine!
🐴
Key would teach Jim the alphabet, how to spell his name and other words! Jim could add numbers, tell time, and recognize state flags! He could even write his name on a chalkboard. A portion of ticket sales were donated to the Humane Societies.
🐴
Jim had his own Broadway play, and won multiple spelling bees!
🐴
The Jim Key Pledge was signed by about 2 million children as a promise to always be kind to animals!
